After the Revolutionary war when Congress was trying to put together
the Constitution of the United States. Our leaders from all thirteen
Colonies were having difficulty coming up with anything. The main problem
was that everyone wanted their Colony to be shown some sort of special
interest that was not necessarily beneficial to all of the Colonies. They
were unwilling to give up any of their sovereign rights. This was causing
great difficulty when it came to putting together a Constitution. They were
not really interested in becoming as united as what the Lord had in mind.
At this time Benjamin Franklin rose up to speak. He quietly spoke, but
the words He spoke brought about the answer to their problem. This is what
He said.
In the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were sensible of
danger, we had daily prayers in this room for Divine protection. Our
prayers, Sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered. All of us who
were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a
superintending Providence in Our favor…. And have we now forgotten this
powerful Friend? Or do we imagine we no longer need His assistance?
I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more
convincing proofs I see of this truth: "that God governs in the affairs of
man." And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it
probable that an empire can rise without his aid?
We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord
build the house, they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this.
I also believe that without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this
political building no better than the builders of Babel; we shall be
divided by our little, partial local interest; our projects will be
confounded; and we ourselves shall become a reproach and a byword down to
future ages. And what is worse, mankind may hereafter, from this
unfortunate instance, despair of establishing government by human wisdom
and leave it to chance, war, or conquest.
I therefore beg leave to move that, henceforth, prayers imploring
the assistance of Heaven and its blessing on our deliberation be held
in this assembly every morning before we proceed to business.
This speech and the sobering reflection in the silence, which followed,
marked the turning point. These men knew that He was right. Following
Benjamin Franklin’s advise prayer was instituted for God’s help and a
Constitution was formed along with the Bill of Rights, that began with
these words,"We the people of the United States…"
From the time that I read about this historical event I have been aware
that prayer is probably the most meaningful and responsible thing a
Christian can do. This nation was brought about through the hand of God in
response to the prayers of common men who believed that God was the
solution to their difficulties. All Americans at that time were not devout
Christians; there were many sinners then just as there are today. There
were hypocrites then just as there are today, but God in His mercy saw fit
to hear the prayers of a few, rather than to judge the whole nation
because of their disobedience to God.
If God can raise up a nation through the prayers of a few people who
trust him, then we must realize that God can save a nation that has turned
from God. He will do it through the prayers of a people who will keep his
commandments and seek His help to bring about the repentance of our
nation.
God has always chosen to use a few when it comes to winning great
battles and victories over satan and his destructive forces. I truly
believe that He is going to do it again. When we share with you the great
things that God is going to do with America, we want you to know that it
will not happen without the prayers of His people who care enough to do
it.
Hezekiah knew that Gods ability to save did not rest on the number of
people he had but only through his humility to seek Gods assistance in the
problem. God rescued Jerusalem and destroyed the enemy because Hezekiah
prayed. As prayer was the answer then it is the key to the salvation of
our Nation today. God will save America if you will continue to pray for
it. He is raising up a people from all over America to do just this very
thing.
Many people are standing back waiting for God to destroy America. It is
the spirit of Jonah. He wanted God to destroy Nineveh not save it. God
brought Nineveh to repentance. Jesus came to seek and to save that which
is lost. He did not come to destroy but to save. To have the mind of
Christ we must think like him. As long as the door is open it is salvation
rather than destruction. Prayer is the solution.
As we pray we are going to see some things that may make us think that
God is not hearing our prayers. I know in order for things to change in
our country that God is going to have to bring about an awakening. This
will no doubt come through distress, God is going to allow America to
suffer some sort of calamity to get her to recognize her condition and
come to Christ. America has never been the holy nation that some
Christians believe. But there has always been a handful of godly people
that God has used to bring about great principal and moral conduct in this
country in the past.
Before the great depression and stock market crash in 29, America had
plunged into sinful practice. It was the age of so called sexual maturity
and do anything you want, a time of lascivious living, the roaring
twenties. The great depression which followed gradually brought about an
awakening to God in our country. People began to pray, God heard and
watched over the nation through her great difficulty.
Following the depression America entered World War II which caused more
families to pray and seek his assistance because they feared for the lives
of Americans who were on the battlefields in Europe and the Pacific. By
the end of the war a very large amount of people in America were living
for God. God knows how to change our minds. People forget, but God knows
how to bring us back when we do. This is why we must continue to pray.
The Christian Crusade for the Salvation of America and the Nation of
Israel would like to thank all of you who care for your continued
steadfast prayer for our nation, the United States of America. We would
also like to thank you for remembering to pray for the Jewish people who
live in this country. It is time for their salvation as well.
God bless all of you and if you need to pray for someone and happen to
think about me and my wife Judy we would sure appreciate your prayers for
us and our children.
Yours in Christ,
Tom and Judy Spurgeon
